The UK’s food and drink exports outside the EU are approaching pre-pandemic levels, according to figures from the Food & Drink Federation (FDF)

UK food and drink exports to non-EU nations increased 13% in the first half of 2021, accounting for 46.6 percent (£4.3 billion) of total UK food and drink exports, owing to a recovery in China, Singapore, Australia, Japan, and the Gulf area.

This growth suggests that non-EU exports have nearly recovered to their pre-COVID levels.

Other non-EU areas, such as Central and South America, have seen sales to certain countries more than treble since H1 2020. Colombia (+142.6 percent ), Mexico (+111.2 percent ), Chile (+105.4 percent ), and Brazil (+87.2 percent ) were the region’s fastest growing main export markets.

This growth was fueled by a rebound in whisky and vegetable oil sales, which were bolstered by rising demand for other UK products, which grew swiftly from a far lower baseline.

Despite these countries’ recovery, overall food and beverage sales in the UK are down £2 billion from pre-COVID levels, owing to a steep decline in exports to the EU.

Imports from the EU are expected to deteriorate further in 2022, when the UK implements full border controls. Animal-derived products were severely damaged, with significant declines in pork (-19.6 percent ), cheese (-17.6 percent ), and chicken imports (-17.9 percent ).
